The dodo is commonly related to many birds, but due to the lack of reasons to fly, lack of predators, and lack of a high fertility rate, it died out very quickly. Why the birds are flightless has led to many theories. One theory is that the dodos could originally fly, but when they were stuck on the island, they had no more uses for the ability to fly. The species did what was smart and adapted to its environment, just in the wrong way. The only other species on the island with the dodos was the dodo’s relatives. The dodo’s pigeon relatives, however, kept their ability to fly. One of the most important things to notice about the dodo is its diet. The dodo’s diet consisted of fruit. Even though the dodos had such strong mouths, they only ate fruit. This lack of predators and prey made them unprepared for the human predators that were to come. The last highly noticeable thing about the dodo is its fertility rate. Each dodo family only lays one egg. This low fertility rate made it difficult for the species to multiply when they were endangered. The Nicobar Pigeon has similar DNA and is the exact opposite as it adapted to the humans quick enough and multiplied. This reproduction rate was spread though other relatives of the dodo. In conclusion, the dodo was a creature that adapted to its environment well, but lacked the ability to cope with predators and that led to its extinction and the progression of its relatives.
